What You Do Matters

From L to R: Beverly Huff, Bob Speelman, Janeen Flynn

January 10, 2019
NOTE: The following story was taken from the blog of Bob Speelman, VP of Business Development and Culture at Foundations Health Solutions. Each week Bob works as an STNA in one of his facilities to better learn the company's goal of being A Culture of Care.

My Journey as a nursing assistant took me this week to Mill Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, our 63-bed facility in Galion, OH. Fred Rowe is the Administrator at Mill Creek, and he is doing a great job in developing our “Culture of Care.” I had the honor of working alongside Janeen Flynn. Janeen is 41, and has three children (14, 10, and 5 years old). Janeen has been an STNA for 10 years; the last three of those years has been at Mill Creek.

Janeen told me she became a nursing assistant after she went to visit her grandmother in a nursing home in Cincinnati and saw how lovingly the STNA cared for her Grandmother. Janeen said “I went away from there wanting to do something important and wanted to make a difference.” Janeen told me she went back and forth between becoming a nurse or becoming a nursing assistant. When she and her fiancée were meeting with their pastor for marriage counseling, Janeen told me that the pastor asked her, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” Janeen told him, “Helping care for people.” It was at that moment Janeen decided to go ahead and get the training to become an STNA. I’m so glad she did!

Working alongside Janeen was pure joy! She had a smile from ear to ear and was so kind and loving not only to her residents but to her fellow staff. Janeen was partnered for the day with Beverly Huff, who was also a great STNA and extremely complimentary about Janeen. It’s amazing to be around caregivers that have a heart and passion for what they do.

“Believe that what you do matters and will make a difference in people’s lives. You don’t have to save the world in one stroke but you can make a difference one person at a time.”

Janeen, I’m so glad you visited that nursing home in Cincinnati to see your Grandmother that day. To that STNA out there that inspired you, I want to say thanks! You may never read this and know the difference you made in Janeen’s life but some day you will.
